Girls Group IRL

On December 7th YTL met with IRL. IRL is an acronym for In Real Life, the Asheville City Schools Foundation afterschool program at Asheville Middle School.  IRL works to provide quality afterschool programing for middle school students.  IRL offers a variety of clubs that last twelve weeks.  Students participate in clubs from 3:30 until 5:15. A primary focus of IRL is assisting in closing the achievement gap, which we at YTL like to refer to as the opportunity gap.


YTL will begin meeting with a group of middle school girls within the IRL setting in February.  The focus of this group will be trifold.  First, within the group facilitators will work with participants to: build self-esteem, create a greater understanding of respect for themselves and others, develop routines that include self-care as well as self-affirmations, and build participant’s capacity to advocate for themselves using common language.


Second, within the group facilitators will lead participants through the exploration of frenemies verse friendships.  The middle school years can be a challenging both physically and emotionally.  YTL staff will work with participants to navigate the often tumultuous world of teen hood. Participants will increase their communication skills and work toward problem solving amongst friends.  Participants will identify the differences in friendships and frienemy relationships.


Last, but not least, participants will be a part of a book group that explores issues related to being a teenaged girl.  Through the book group participants will increase their knowledge of strategies needed to be proficient readers and to become lifelong learners.





                Valentine’s Fundraiser

Last year YTL held a Valentine’s Day raffle where we split the proceeds with a winner.  This year YTL is planning a Sweethearts Supper, Songs, and Silent Auction.  We have secured the Eddington Center Gym and GO Kitchen for food preparation. 

We will have five chefs preparing different courses for the evening.  In addition, we are securing entertainment for the evening and we will hold a raffle and have a silent auction table. There will be an area of the gym designated for dancing.

We will need volunteers to help set up and clean up afterwards.  Doors will open at 6:00 with the first course served at 6:45. We will have a sign up form available on our Facebook and website beginning Monday, January 11th. 


Ticket sales will begin Friday, January 1st and raffle sales will begin Friday, January 8th. Below is the sample flyer that is being updated for release this coming Friday. The flyer will include ticket prices $65 per couple and $35 per individual.  Prices increase by ten dollars when purchasing at the door.
